The Friedrich-List-Gymnasium (FLG) is a state school for secondary education and is situated in Asperg (approximately 12.000 inhabitants) on the outskirts of Stuttgart in the south of Germany.
The FLG is academic and leads to a final exam (Abitur) which allows access to university.
Our school is co-educational and this academic year (September 2008 - July 2009) we have a total number of 655 students. In year there are usually 3 different classes (e.g. 5A, 5B, 5C). The students are between 10 and 19 years old and attend our school after four years of primary school. At the moment we are in a transition phase as from 2012 onwards all students will take the final exam after eight years at our school instead of 9 as it used to be.
Our timetable
There are 6 lessons in the morning which each last 45 minutes. There is a 5 minute break between each lesson and a 20 minute break after the third lesson. Lunch break is one hour during which students either go home for lunch or have lunch at our brand new canteen. Students have two to four lessons in the afternoon on one up to three afternoons every week depending on the year they are in.
The curriculum
From year 5 to year 10 the students have little influence on the subjects they take. Our first foreign language is English (from year 5), the second French (from year 6) and in year 8 there is a choice of Spanish and Latin. Both English and French are mandatory whereas Spanish or Latin are the individual choices of the students. German, Maths, Science, Physics (from year 7), Chemistry (from year 8) , IT (in year 5 and 6), Biology, Geography, History (from year 6), social studies (from year 9), Physical Education, Art and Music are all mandatory subjects. Religious Studies is also taught and attended by most students.
In the final two years the students can drop some subjects (e.g. a science or one foreign language), focus on other by choosing extended courses or they can also take some more exotic subjects like Astronomy, Philosophy, Psychology.
The final exam (Abitur) must be taken in German, Maths and one foreign language as well as in other subjects depending on the student's choice. The exam has both written and oral parts and usually starts after Easter.
The extracurricular activities
Our school has a strong tradition of both musical and theatrical activities. We have got several choirs, a big band and other groups of musicians who get together to practice for specific events. There are two drama groups, one for the lower school and one for the upper school. In some years almost all groups join forces to produce a big event (e.g. a musical).
There are also several sports clubs who take part in tournaments or help to organize tournaments in school. Our boys' handball teams have been successful for many years even on a national level.
Exchanges
We have got exchanges with schools in France, Sweden, Hungary and Spain and links to other schools in Greece, Spain and Poland via the Comenius Project. Both teachers and students enjoy these exchanges and visits and we are always happy to welcome visitors at our school.
